On this Hambletonian Day, I would like to present for your consideration a column written by our friend Andrew Cohen which was published on the eve of today's Hambletonian in the Newark Star Ledger. A more eloquent column could not have been written concerning the situation in New Jersey. The whole column must be read but this one section sums it up:
It's not like I'm asking for much. I just want you to stop acting like an idiot and to find a way to merge Atlantic City's entrenched gaming interests with the rest of the state's entrenched horse-racing interests. It's not rocket science. There should be gaming at racetracks in New Jersey. Period. The stranglehold Atlantic City interests have over your lawmakers must end.
If you live in New Jersey, I suggest sending copies of this column to your state legislators. This is an election year in New Jersey not only for governor but the entire state assembly. Call your elected officials and candidates and tell them this is THE issue which matters to you and you want to know their position on this. Call your state senators and tell them while they are not up for re-election this year, when it comes time for re-election you will remember their position.
The time to act is now. Otherwise, the Hambletonian day card we will see today may become a distant memory in the future.
