How Did This Happen?

News from Lexington indicates that Josh Marks, assistant trainer to Tracy Brainard who trains for Bulletproof Enterprises, has had his license revoked by the Kentucky Harness Racing Authority and has been ordered off the grounds of The Red Mile as of tomorrow morning. Harnessracing.com reports Marks' license was revoked for failing to disclose he was ineligible for licensing in the state of New Jersey.

It is unknown as to why Marks is ineligible for licensing in New Jersey and quite honestly, it is not the point of this column. The point is how in the 21st century does this happen? Unfortunately, this is not the first time someone has gotten caught lying on a license application. The question is why do these problems get discovered after the fact? In these days of computers, there should be a central repository of all rulings against any individual involved in harness racing so when an applicant seeks a license or a renewal, his/her regulatory history should come up and decisions such as being ineligible for licensing or license revocations should be flagged. Once a person's regulatory history is reviewed, then the decision should be made whether or not to license an individual.

The day after perhaps the greatest trotting performance ever in the Kentucky Futurity, we are dealing with headlines regarding license revocations. The biggest shame is it need not have happened.
