Hats Off to the NJTHA

One has to give credit to the NJTHA for their plans regarding Monmouth Park.  They are talking about redeveloping part of their 327 acres to make Monmouth Park a year round destination, even when there is no live racing.  Among the things they are considering are:

  • Adding a hotel with an attached water park.
  • Constructing a boardwalk.
  • Adding branded restaurants that would serve lunch and dinner even when there is no racing.
  • Minature golf course
  • Live music events

I wish the NJTHA all the success with their endeavors.  Instead of worrying about slots, other racetracks would be better served by making their facilities an entertainment and recreation destination that would be open all year; making use of the facility year round when there is no racing.  Getting people to the track for any type of event will bring more attention to your racetrack, potentially attracting new customers.

As the thoroughbred horsemen are saying, it is nice to have their destiny in their own control.  Isn't it about time harness tracks adopt the NJTHA's philosophy.

Sometimes, you just need to help yourself.
