Wednesday is Brief

In a sure sign that Jack Frost is on his way to the Northeast, Tioga Downs closing weekend is upon us.  Check Me Out will be taking on older trotters Friday evening and has being rewarded to taking this next step by drawing post position nine.  While not going against FFA trotters, it should be an interesting test and provides gamblers with a bettable race whether for or against the filly.

Mohawk Racetrack will close its backstretch starting December 15, due to the uncertainty regarding the situation in Ontario.  Traditionally, the backstretch remains open all year with qualifiers taking place at Mohawk with the horses stabled at Mohawk being shipped over to Woodbine to race at night.  Where the horses will be stabled for racing at Woodbine?  On the surface, it may not be as dramatic an impact as it appears as fewer than three hundred horses are traditionally housed on the backstretch during the winter months.  Of course, it may be a moot point as WEG is considering not racing during January and February of 2013.  Horsemen are opposed to eliminating winter racing at Woodbine, preferring to race three days a week for the entire year instead.

Of course, this all depends on what happens in the province.  Should racing be given a significant assist from the provincial government, there is nothing to keep WEG from keeping the backstretch at Mohawk open and adding dates.
